How To Stay Focused

With so many distractions going on these days, it has become harder to concentrate on simple tasks. We all need the ability to focus. Have you ever struggled to complete a task for this reason? Many people have admitted that no matter how hard they try, they don’t know how to stay focused. Here are several hacks to help you stay on track.

Get some sleep

Sleep is one of the most important needs for everyone. Not only is this a time for the body to heal itself, but it allows you to rest and renew your mind. I have personally had dreams and projects come to me during REM (deep rapid eye movement) sleep. When I woke up, I was refreshed, renewed and able to refocus.

How do you get more sleep? One way to start is to avoid late-night sugary snacks. Late-night snacking is especially tempting during a good movie or while your are on your devices. Devices are another distraction to avoid along with snacks, because a combination of the two can really disrupt sleep even more. If you are not lactose intolerant, try drinking warm milk to help you sleep. I prefer almond milk, but to each his own. Hot camomile tea is a great alternative. Another way to start resting is to listen to relaxing music, affirmations or rain sounds.

You can subscribe to a new peaceful channel called Joyful Tranquility TV to relax and sleep as you tune in.  Going to bed early can also help you get an early morning start and still feel well-rested.

Exercising during the day before bedtime can also help you rest better and is a great way to wind down after a good after-workout shower.

Eat a healthy meal

Another way to learn how to stay focused is to refuel. Green, leafy veggies and protein like chicken or fish along with water to stay hydrated are brain food. According to Harvard Medical School, brain food include:

  • green, leafy vegetables like kale and spinach
  • fatty fish such as salmon
  • walnuts
  • a variety of berries
  • tea or coffee in moderation

Make a to-do list

When I was disorganized, I found to-do lists to be the most helpful. Write down everything you need done and do one task at a time. You can write down similar tasks as a group and check off each task as you complete it.  As you do each task, add an emotion after each one is complete.

Adding emotion or positive self-talk is a great way of rewarding yourself after your to-do list is complete. What better way to motivate yourself than seeing it all on paper after it is done? Rinse and repeat each day.

Prayer and meditation

Talking to God has helped me stay refocused by communicating and listening for instruction. Did you hear that? Prayer and meditation are two-way communication. Quiet your mind and think about one thing at a time, even if it seems far-fetched. Sometimes ideas that seem far-fetched could be the very idea you need to get ahead.

Daydreaming can be abstract visions with meaning. Ask God for guidance and to help you interpret what you see. It may be the answer you have been seeking all along.

Whether you’re doing too many things in little time,  lack of sleep or the wrong diet, the lack of focus can distract you from completing tasks.

To sum it up

It’s important to learn how to stay focused by applying the above tips to your agenda. These are just a few ways to reorganize your mind. It is wise to not overwhelm you with too many methods to stay focused, because that can defeat the purpose of staying focused in the first place. Just try what works for you and see your results later. You may be surprised at how much you get done when you focus on one way to refocus at a time, one step at a time.
